2020-2021 Ryukyu Lantern Festival

Beginning Friday, December 4th 2020 and stretching all the way to Sunday, March 28th 2021 you view the annual Lantern Festival at Murasaki Mura. One of the few events that hasn’t been cancelled this year, we’re very glad to know that this beautiful festival will be taking place once again.

This festival dates back to the 14th Century, the Golden Age of the Ryukyu Archipelago. Over 3,000 lanterns adorn the miniature village in a recreation of an ancient Ryukyuan village. Each lantern is unique and a window into the ancient Okinawan culture, some with love poems written inside of them.

The staff at Murasaki Mura will be taking extra precautions, and of course sanitizing, and wearing masks is a must, as well it is requested that patrons practice social distancing measures while viewing the lanterns.

Typically known for delicious snacks, and entertainment like Eisa Dancing and Okinawan Folk Singing, we are told that this year’s event will be a much much smaller version of the usal grand show. However it is a quiet and peaceful venue and will as in other years be the perfect place to take some beautiful photography.

Lanterns will be lit from 6 to 10pm, and the cost for admission is 1,200yen for adults and 500yen for Children 12 and over. (Younger children free)

Enjoy your trip to the lantern festival and get in touch with the spirit of the Ryukyu Islands.
