The Churaumi Aquarium located within the Ocean Expo Park in Okinawa’s Motobu region was the largest aquarium in the world when it opened in 2002. (It holds third place now behind the Aquarium inside the Dubai Mall, and the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta Georgia)
The main tank inside of Churaumi (Okinawan for “Beautiful Ocean”) holds just under 2 million gallons of water.
Named “Kuroshio Sea”, the main tank is home to many, many species of fish and wildlife, but the two whale sharks living there are the stars of the show. There are also Manta Rays, a Shark Exhibit, and a Live Dolphin Show happening daily.
For families living in Okinawa with small children who would like to make regular trips to the aquarium can buy an annual passport which is a huge saving when compared to paying admission fees over and over again. Basically, 2 trips to the aquarium in a year would justify purchasing the passport, and with so much information and interesting programs available at the aquarium we think it’s a pretty good value.
